I Get Lost in the Magic of Books

By Oore Olayinka on June 15, 2018

I get lost. I get lost in stories and in books. I get lost in libraries and bookstores, wandering around the many shelves of books. You see, I get lost in the magic of books and the beauty of words.

I have no idea when I became entranced by books. What I do know is, I’ve been reading books for as long as I can remember. I vividly remember how on rainy Lagos days, I would curl up by the glass sliding doors in the house so I could feel the chill of the rain. Armed with a blanket and a cup of hot cocoa, a good book would keep me company till I was lulled to sleep by the sounds of the rain. Those were such good times.

The spell books have placed on me has gotten me in trouble more than once. As a kid, I would get so lost in books that I would forget everything around me. People would call my name and I wouldn’t respond. It’s not that I was ignoring them, it’s just that I was too busy taking a trip with the characters in the latest novel I was reading. This earned me a lot of disciplinary action. Apparently, parents don’t like it when they’ve been frantically calling your name thinking you might be missing but the whole time you’ve just been in bed reading.

In boarding school, I used to take my many books into the classrooms and read them while my teachers were teaching. I got so many books seized from me that way but I still didn’t care. It got so bad that my teachers had to call my parents. Then, I decided that I would pull all-nighters to read my books instead. When all were supposed to be asleep in obedience to the school’s strict rules, I would still be reading. I got in trouble with the dorm staff who were there to ensure students went to bed at the appointed time.

My late night indulgence also had an adverse effect on me as I would show up everywhere tired and groggy. I would even end up taking long naps in class. This time, the school’s nurses, the dorm staff and my teachers put a call to my parents.

I believe that books take you places.  You can fly over the trees of Neverland with Peter Pan or cast spells with Lena Duchannes of “The Caster Chronicles” series.

Books have sparked my imagination, increased my knowledge and strengthened my vocabulary. Books have become my escape route, my avenue to dreams and my safe haven. It’s no wonder why I get lost in the magic of them.
